How old and how many years have you been riding?

I was given my first PTW, a brand new 1959 Lambretta, for Christmas that year. I was 15, and I rode the streets of Paris for the next two years. When my family returned to the states, I continued riding for another year, but then sold the scooter to buy my first car, a 1953 Chevy. I was on a 46...

    Ultimate Harley Davidson ....

Wow! The _Bud Light of MCs_! This is an astonishingly brilliant metaphor, Sal, thanks. I hope you won't mind if I use it in casual conversation.

    straight razors..

You are right about the rip-off prices of those new cartridge style razors, not sure about the closer shave though. I stopped using them about 4 years ago and returned to an old-fashioned double-edged Merkur German razor. I buy razor blades in bulk off ebay; the last batch ended up costing me...

    Raise Your Glasses to Zak

We had to put our girl, Lulu down 10/27/09 so we know how you feel, friend. Lulu will always be my own first love of a dog, but as another poster has mentioned, it's time for a new pup! I've rescued three dogs from certain death over the past three years, and they are an integral part of our...

    Because Motorcycles Don't Lie

Exactly. It is a very personal thing, usually only tacitly understood. I wouldn't dare such an undertaking myself. I'm guessing two things about the Peter Jones quote: 1. He transposed the u and e in Deus ex machina then posted without spell checking. 2. He isn't aware that the phrase...

    why protection is good

I have a mesh jacket like Sal, but I admit that as hot as it gets here in Louisiana I don't wear it very often. Usually it's just boots, jeans, t-shirt, gloves and 3/4 helmet.

    Some thoughts about RAT

This was a very interesting thread for me, and I must say that as only an occasional visitor to both NBR and RAT, I was a bit surprised at some of the negative comments made here about the over-abundance of similar threads — like oil changes etc — over there. I have posted many more times over...

    Triumph Wind Screens

Me too. Yep, there's a lot of buffeting when you get up there past ~ 70 MPH, but I think that's probably true of any minimally-sized screen. I was thinking of the Clearview screen also mentioned in this thread, but at another forum, posters mentioned that the mounting specs were off a good bit...

    New Metzler

It amuses me that so many are comparing old Metzlers to new tires and claiming a world of difference. I would hope so. I just put a new set of D404s on my '07 Honda. They aren't bad tires, but IMO the Metzlers on my Speedy are far better handling tires.

What is the best tire make and size combination ?

I've gotta admit that the tread wear on my 2011 Speedmaster's rear OEM tire seems a bit excessive for the mere 4000 miles on it; the front tire, OTOH, looks new. Both the front and rear are OEM Metzlers and do perform satisfactorily, but the OEM Dunlops on my '07 Honda made 10K miles before...

Loss of power, stall, start runs fine...

My '11 Speedmaster has stalled on me twice over the past 7 months; quite mysterious. On each occasion, I had ridden the bike ~30 miles on the open road at fairly constant speeds, and as I slowed to a stop, the engine would stall. In each case the engine started right back up, so I guessed it was...

    RPM's @ 100kms(60mph)

^ I've never felt a need for a 6th gear either. On the rural roads I travel most, I'm doing about 50 MPH which is in the ~ 4000 RPM range, I think. That might be on the verge of "dogging it" but I know riding in 5th at 40 MPH certainly is. I'm consistently getting 50+ MPG, and like tarmac bob, I...

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression #13 — soon to be named Tropical Storm Lee — is poised to dump about a foot of water on the central Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle over the Labor Day weekend.

Best Lookin Motorcycle of all time!

And to quote that poster, Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder. This beerholder's opinion is that the 916 is one of the FUGLIEST MCs on the planet... outdone only by several of the current BMW models.

How to: change oil and check tire pressures

I would like to build my own jack as illustrated above, but I'm not sure whether the tailpipes on the Speedmaster are high enough to avoid denting them:

    Jokes Thread

After his trial and sentencing, the new convict was sent to the prison down state where he was assigned his jail cell. He met his cell mate who seemed quiet and reserved so he kept to himself. Shortly after "Lights Out" he heard an inmate in another cell shout out, "417". Immediately there was...
